With Easter now a memory and May right around the corner, you may be experiencing the emptiness that comes after a holiday celebration. Just as grief pain has its ups and downs, so do we after a celebration. All the hustle and bustle along with many family and friends being around and now the quiet? Some of us welcome the silence while others crave the busyness. Our grief has needs of its own whether with or without others around. Only you can know what your needs are. Maybe with spring here it's time to prepare your garden or flower beds. After forty days of anticipation for the Easter celebration; today’s the day! If you celebrate the Easter holiday, you've walked the road with Jesus and his Mother Mary. Maybe your grief pain mirrors theirs. Whether you walked along the road with your loved one as they declined and died or you walked the road as Mother Mary, helplessly watching her son be crucified and dying. The pain of losing someone we love is real and should always be acknowledged. Jesus' resurrection displays to believers that there is life beyond death. Your loved one may physically be gone but their spirit is alive and well! Celebrate your loved ones this Easter by sharing the memories and telling the stories. Keep their legacy alive. As we prepare for our Easter celebration, we also may feel anticipation and anxiety. Whether you're new to your grief pain or your loss has been a while, we always miss those we love. Holidays have a way of reminding us how much we miss our loved ones. Celebrations can be easier on our hearts if we include those we've lost. Remember, if we don't share the memories and stories of our loved ones whom we've lost, they die a second death. Planning ahead emotionally is a healthy way to eliminate the anxiety. Between mother nature and our grief we would like to think we're in control but we're not! Weather forecasts can change within minutes as our grief pain can too. One day or moment, all is well and the next moment we're overtaken by memories and emotions. How well did you recover from the weather? Our grief journey runs parallel to our normal life before the grief pain. How you reacted to life before the loss of your loved one then, hasn't changed now; it has only become a little more magnified. April brings new life and new beginnings!! Our grief pain provides a new normal and perspective on how we view our life and the world around us. April begins on Tuesday and as we anticipate its arrival we are preparing for warmer weather as is the natural process. Grief too is a natural process we experience after the loss of a loved one. As we move forward into our April grief, let's focus on finding moments of Joy to help provide a sense of perspective during your grief journey. Focus on the new birth of spring flowers, trees and nature in general. It's also good for our well-being to get out and absorb that sunshine. Other ways of coping may be music, poetry or other forms of art. Be you! Be gentle with you and allow those love tears to flow and laughter to overtake you. This, my friends, is healthy grief! One just needs to watch the weather to get a good idea of what grieving the loss of a loved one is like. One day sunshine and warmth and the next day, cold, snow and wind! Up and down, happy and sad moments can mimic the weather. With daylight savings time we gain longer days of light and sunshine! We control our feelings and our mood; and with that being said, the weather can control our emotions and mood as well. However, we still should be the one in control! When we're able to express those feelings of how we feel, we can keep the sunshine bright no matter what mother nature says! The weather in March can be unpredictable as with our grief. The ups and downs, good days and bad days along with grief bursts. Grief bursts are those moments when all is well in your day and out of nowhere comes a song, expression or thought of your loved one and you become a puddle. This is normal as we travel forward on our grief journey. For a moment, stop and look at your thumb. As everyone's thumbprint is unique and individual, so is your grief journey. There are no rules as to how to grieve. As long as you're not hurting yourself or other's it's your journey. Let’s enjoy March together!
