This is Linda Sue, and I am the grief specialist at Patton-Schad Funeral Home. It is my pleasure to bring you this week’s program. This program is our way of reaching out to help families deal with those difficult days surrounding the death anniversary of a loved one. Nearing the end of October and seeing the amazing colors of Autumn, we are made aware that the holiday seasons are about to begin. One season is coming to an end, and another is approaching. When it comes to the pain of grief, we know it's better to prepare than just wait it out. Looking ahead is helpful but it's equally important to live in the moment. Celebrating your loved one's Heaven day is crucial as we heal our grief pain. They have a legacy to be shared and you've become the storyteller. How will you celebrate their special day? Visiting the cemetery, eating their favorite foods, going to their favorite places, lighting a candle or getting together with those whom they loved and share those stories and memories! It's all healthy. Enjoy and celebrate! As your loved one's Heaven day approaches it is a great time to stop and remember. We know when someone we love dies, they will forever live on in our hearts through memories shared. Their Heaven day reminds us to actively remember our loved one and commemorate the life they lived. Never allow anyone to take your memories away because they want to save you from pain. It's good and healthy to display photos and celebrate their Heaven day, although it may be tear filled and painful, but as time goes on the pain gets softer and your heart feels lighter. This program is our way of reaching out to help families deal with those difficult days surrounding the death anniversary of a loved one. October has kind of snuck up on us, which means flea markets and farmers markets will be coming to an end and it's really final until next spring. This does create a sadness, but yet a reality. As with the change of seasons so does our grief pain change with time. It's important to always give yourself credit for the courage to move forward after the loss of a loved one. It is no surprise how our life gets turned upside down with their loss, but courage is needed to move ahead creating a new normal. To express our feelings out loud is a healthy way to mourn. You must express your grief pain if you are to heal. It's been proven that if we can "allow ourselves to mourn well, we can then go on to live well and love well"; and that's a quote from Alan Wolfelt. The Autumn solstice has begun and with it the changes in nature. We can never get away from change. Some changes are welcome and others, like the loss of a loved one to death, become a challenge. Experiencing our emotions is challenging enough then add the seasonal changes to that. We are very sensitive when it comes to the pain of grief. The weather changes only exhilarate those feelings of loss and sadness. Sunshine brings us hope and happiness where as cloudy weather brings about sadness, stormy weather; anger and frustration and cold weather brings on loneliness and despair. Just realizing this is half the battle. Celebrate your loved one's heaven date with the sharing of stories and memories. This will assist in creating your own sunshine and put you in control. With September comes a time to begin, a time of change due to the summer months being over and getting into the Fall routine. As with grief pain when we lose someone close to us to death; we reluctantly know there will be a change and that "new normal" has to become a reality. By nature, most of us don't like change so this does become quite a challenge. We know we have to move forward but are not ready to let go. We forget that we can take our loved ones with us as we let go and move forward. They are and will always be in our hearts! Call on them to assist you with your "new normal" and you'll be amazed at how peaceful your days will become. If you believe in spirit, you'll be surprised at how close they really are and ready to help you move on.
