As we approach the end of October, Halloween and All Souls day come to mind. Halloween and All Hallowed, and All Souls day honoring those loved ones who have died throughout this last year. Their names are read out loud at your church. Remembering and reflecting on our loved ones is crucial and very healthy in the healing process. Praying and celebrating our loved ones' passing now becomes an expression of love, encouraging a shift in our grief from mourning and sadness to hopefulness. Grief becomes not a final end but a journey to love and remembrance. Celebrate your loved one and remember! October is also known as a transitional month as we've experienced some gloomy days along with sun filled days; whether our grief pain knows of or doesn't care about the weather. The pain can seem stronger; you may feel sadder or more emotional with the weather. On these gloomy days for your self-care, you'll need to create your own sunshine and be more aware of your feelings. Laughter, a good book or movie or meeting up with a loved one are some ways to create your own sunshine. Be gentle with you. Prioritize your self-care doing those things that were put to the side during and before your loved one’s death. Connect with others and create supportive traditions that would honor your loved one. The length of time your loved one is gone never makes a difference, one week or ten years, you loved, and they loved you in return; you miss them no matter how long. We know September signifies a shift; mother nature reminds us of this. As your loved one's anniversary comes closer, you may be triggered by memories of your loved one. Although it may be painful, the memories also provide the reality that you loved, and someone loved you in return. Our sense of loss becomes real again after fading away with time. The phrase, "time heals all wounds" comes to mind and by now you've experienced your grief pain and strong emotions have softened. It is unrealistic to expect the pain to be gone forever. When we lose someone we love so deeply to death, a part of us goes with them as well and life as we knew it will never be the same; thus, your new normal. Grief pain has no timeline although the pain may soften with time it will never really go away. As you move forward, you’ll learn to integrate your loss into your self-being and find ways to honor the memory of what was lost. With the end of August brings a normal sadness that Labor day signifies the end of summer; another holiday as we move forward in our grief journey. Back to a routine; your new normal. Coping with the loss of a loved one means we need to understand that the pain of grief is real. By acknowledging your grief pain, you can now move forward to healing. Some ways to help you do this are to allow yourself to feel and know it's ok to be sad, sometimes we may want to talk to others, take breaks from your grief when needed and create new traditions to honor your loved one and most important of all; celebrate life!
