Obituary

John J. “Johnny” Mehr, age 84 of Greenwald, died peacefully on Sunday, March 7, 2021 at his home near Greenwald.

A private family Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 11 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald with Rev. Marvin Enneking officiating. Inurnment will be in the parish cemetery with military honors by the Melrose Veterans Honor Guard. The Mass will be recorded and can be viewed at the bottom of this obituary Thursday afternoon.

Public visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Parish prayers will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

John Joseph Mehr was born October 14, 1936 in St. Francis, Minnesota to Peter and Frances (Schmidt) Mehr. He graduated from Melrose High School in 1955. John served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1960; honorably discharged on October 28, 1960.  He worked 36 years at a chemical plant in St. Paul; retiring in 1997. John was united in marriage to Rita Wenker on October 3, 2004 at St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Greenwald.

He was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church, Greenwald Lions Club, American Legion Post 101, and was a past honorary guard. He enjoyed trips to the casino, four-wheeling, classic cars, playing cards, reading, doing yardwork, and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Mehr of Greenwald; step-children, Rich (Cindy) Dockendorf of Champlin, Alvin Dockendorf of Greenwald, Kevin (Lynn) Dockendorf of Cold Spring, Karen (Mike) Gavin of Cold Spring, Connie (Randy) Hansen of Brooklyn Park, John (Kristy) Dockendorf of Grey Eagle, Kathy (Steve) Gilk of Greenwald, Joe (Rodrigo) Wenker of Minneapolis, Steve (Ann) Wenker of Royalton, Sharon (Rich) Gaebel of Albany, Mark (Donna) Wenker of Sauk Centre, Mary Wenker of Sartell, Barb Kennedy of Sartell, Jim (Michelle) Wenker of East Bethel, and Theresia (Paul) Berglund of St. Paul; 34 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren with one on the way; sister, Frances Johnson of St. Paul; and sister-in-law, Marlene Mehr of Oakdale.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Frances Mehr; and brother, Bernard Mehr.

Urn bearers will be Karen Gavin and Joe Wenker. Cross bearer will be Andrew Gilk and scripture bearer will be Jackson Gilk. Lector will be Isaiah Gilk.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. John’s - St. Andrew’s Catholic School.
