Winifred Monetta Lingle was born June 11, 1927 in Richland, South Dakota to George and Winifred (Rozell) Lingle. She lost her mother at the age of 11, and when her father was drafted into the military, she went to live at the Sioux Falls Children’s Home. At the age of 18, Winnie began making a life for herself, cleaning cabins in exchange for a place to live. She later shared an apartment with Patrick’s sisters, which is how she and Patrick met. Winnie married Patrick Montagne on April 2, 1948, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She worked at Windcharger in Sioux Falls, manufacturing turbine engine parts for the war.
Winnie and Patrick moved to Sauk Centre in 1958 for Patrick’s work. She then devoted her time to raising their children. The family later moved to a hobby farm near Osakis where they lived until 1988. They then moved to St. Joseph for ten years before relocating to Albany, where Winnie continued to make her home.
Winnie was a member of Seven Dolors Catholic Church and the Albany Christian Women. She enjoyed remodeling, painting, and fixing up old houses. She had a special talent for taking something old and making it beautiful again. Winnie also loved quilting, sewing, and crafting.
She is survived her children, Patrick (Sharon) Montagne of Chino Hills, California, Monetta (Kevin) Watry of Albany, and Doretta (Dana) Duea of St. Cloud; grandchildren, Michelle (Kevin) Roe of Chino Hills, California, Shawn Montagne of Albany, Dustin (Courtney) Watry of St. Cloud, Daniel Watry of Atoka, Tennessee, Aundrea Duea of St. Cloud, and Briana (Allen) Keene of St. Cloud; great-grandchildren, Liam, Wyatt, Dominic, Dylan, Peyton, Soren, Brandon (Kylie), and Bryan; great-great-grandchildren, Penelope, Eleanor, and Kamora; and sister-in-law, Jeanne Rollings of Hudson, South Dakota.
