Melvin "Mel" Hartung

Melvin “Mel” A. Hartung, age 56 of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 5, 2026 at St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 13 at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony, Minnesota with Rev. Derek Wiechmann officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Thursday all at the church.

Melvin Anthony Hartung was born on May 26, 1970, in Melrose, Minnesota, to Anthony and Ann Marie (Pick) Hartung. He graduated from Albany High School and began his career farming alongside his parents. Mel later worked at Menards, where he started as a laborer and worked his way into a management position. Later he began working at Milaca Public Schools as a custodian.

Mel was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include his children, Ellie Hartung and Mason Hartung; siblings, Gerald (Bernice) Hartung, Mary Jane (Gerry) Boeckermann, Doris (John) Leen, Eugene (JoAnn) Hartung, Renee (Greg) Wensmann, LeRoy (Diane) Hartung, Lillian (John) Arnzen, Darlene (Glen) Engelmeyer, Geri (Jeff) Fleischhaker; sister-in-law, Peg Hartung; and many nieces and nephews.

Mel was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Ann Hartung; infant sister, Bernadette Hartung; brothers and sister, Kenny Hartung, Izzy Hartung, and Janet Hartung; and nephews, Greg Hartung and Richard “Rich” Boeckermann.
