Mary B. Goebel (Mrs. Virgil Goebel), age 95, of Freeport, died Saturday, October 19, 2019 at Mother of Mercy Campus of Care in Albany with her family at her side.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Freeport on Saturday, October 26 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Dan Walz presiding. Interment will be held in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. on Saturday at the church.
Mary Barbara Goebel was born March 29, 1924 in Freeport, Minnesota to Leo and Margaret (Harren) Hiltner. She attended Sacred Heart School in Freeport, Melrose High School, and St. Cloud Teacher’s College.
On March 4, 1946 she married Virgil Goebel at Sacred Heart Church in Freeport. Mrs. Goebel taught in the rural schools in Stearns County, including the District School in St. Rosa. For many years until her retirement, she taught Second Grade at Sacred Heart School in Freeport. After her retirement, she volunteered in the school office.
Mary has been active in many organizations, having held offices in most of them; Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, Diocesan Board of Education, National Catholic Society of Foresters, Friends of the Library, Melrose Historical Society, and Minnesota Senior Federation – Central Region, as well as having been active in various parish ministries.
Her survivors include Michael and Audrey Goebel of New Hope, Charles Goebel of Waite Park, Tom and Diana Goebel of Jordan, John Goebel of Sauk Centre, Dr. Mary Komala of Findley, Ohio and Marian Goebel of Melrose; 17 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and sisters and brother, Louise Hemker of Hopkins, Betty Carota of Hollister, California, Leon Hiltner of Maple Grove, and Sister Marius O.S.B., St. Scholastica of St. Cloud.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil in 1994; parents; brother, Richard “Bud” Hiltner; daughter-in-law, Margie Goebel; and son-in-law, Felix Komala.
