Katherine "Kathy" Gebhardt

Katherine “Kathy” Faye Gebhardt, beloved nurse, devoted family member and friend, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 19, 2026 at the age of 89.

Kathy Faye Fowler was born on April 12, 1937, in Fairmont, Minnesota, to Osmer Merwin Fowler and Florence Glee Morgan Fowler. She graduated from Fairmont High School in 1955 and went on to attend Mankato State University, earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Registered Nurse degree in 1958.

On March 26, 1961, Kathy married Kenneth A. Gebhardt, at Fairmont Congregational Church. After living in several Minnesota communities, the couple settled in Sauk Centre in 1963. Their son, Kraig, was born on November 20, 1963, in Melrose.

Kathy dedicated her life to caring for others through a distinguished nursing career. She was employed at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park and Immanuel Hospital in Mankato before moving to Melrose Hospital. Beginning in 1965, Kathy served as a Registered Nurse at Melrose Hospital, where she worked in numerous roles over a remarkable 37-year career. In her later years there, she served as Director of Nursing, earning the respect and admiration of colleagues, patients, and families alike. She also shared her talents through part-time work at St. Michael’s in Sauk Centre.

Family was at the center of Kathy’s life. She endured heartbreaking losses, including the death of her son, Kraig, in an automobile accident on March 27, 1981. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ken, on December 14, 2000, and by her sister, Florence Dyste of Midland, Michigan, on October 7, 2025.

Kathy was a faithful member of First United Congregational Church in Sauk Centre. She treasured the friendships she formed throughout her life, especially her dear friend and “sister of the heart,” Melva Ammann of St. James. Melva’s children and grandchildren were near and dear to her heart and she shared many treasured memories with them over the years.

Kathy is survived by her nieces and nephews: Timothy (Susan) Dyste of Midland, Michigan; Matt (Karen) Dyste of Eugene, Oregon; Karen (Max) DeVet of White Bear Lake, Minnesota; and Sue (Joel) Honaman of Brant, Michigan. She will be lovingly remembered by many extended family members, friends, former colleagues, and all whose lives she touched through her kindness and compassionate care.

Kathy’s legacy is one of service, dedication, and love. Her commitment to nursing and her genuine concern for others left an enduring impact on her community and countless people.
