Alphonse G. “Al” Hiltner, age 93 of Melrose, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on Sunday, May 24, 2026 at his home in Melrose, Minnesota.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, June 4 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose with Rev. Mitchell Bechtold officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Thursday at the church.
Alphonse George Hiltner was born January 20, 1933 in Melrose, Minnesota to John and Agnes (Dickhaus) Hiltner. Al went to country school through the eighth grade. He was united in marriage to Donna Mae Olmscheid on June 17, 1967 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose. Al was a dairy farmer who farmed on the family farm until 1995 when he retired and moved into the town of Melrose. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Melrose and St. Leo’s Court Catholic Order of Foresters. Al enjoyed hunting, ice and summer fishing, trapping, word search books, playing cards, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his children, William “Bill” (Tammy) Hiltner of Casselton, North Dakota, Ann (Victor) Uphoff of Melrose, Angela (Mike) Feldewerd of Melrose, and Jason (Amanda) Hiltner of New Richmond, Wisconsin; son-in-law, Bruce Oleson of Little Falls; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren with one on the way; sisters, Lidwina Wolbeck, Clarissa Barthel, and Anna Mae Speldrich; and sisters-in-law, Irene Hiltner and Carolyn Hiltner.
Alphonse was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Mae Hiltner on March 12, 1996; parents; children, Jeffery Hiltner on October 28, 2000 and Amy Oleson on May 15, 2003; grandson, Johnathan Hiltner on October 12, 2025; sisters, Leona Wolbeck, Alvina Hiltner, Martha Butkowski, and Juletta Kunstleben; and brothers, Edward, Edwin, Raymond, Melvin, Leander, and Cyril Hiltner.
