We grew up in Bloomington, Minnesota at a time when you could ride your bike to Metropolitan Stadium for a Twins game and to Bush Lake to meet your friends for a day at the beach. When we graduated from Lincoln High School it still had a cornfield around it!
Pat graduated in 1978 from the University of Minnesota (B.S. Mortuary Science) and then served his internship with the Range Funeral Home in Virginia, Minnesota. During the next few years, he was a staff funeral director with Albin Funeral Chapel in Minneapolis while Sue was an underwriter for Home Insurance in Edina. When our first son was born we knew we wanted to find a smaller community to raise our family.
Not long after this, we were invited to Melrose, Minnesota to meet with Bernie and Mary Schad, who needed a manager for their new funeral home in Sauk Centre. So in 1984, we moved to Sauk Centre and Pat began working for Schad Funeral Homes. Bernie was a great teacher in the profession but also a great example of how to become involved in the community. In 1993 Bernie and Mary transferred ownership of their funeral homes to us.
Pat has been a member of the Sauk Centre Lions Club since 1985 and is a past president. He is also a past president of the Sauk Centre Area Chamber of Commerce and served as the Chamber representative on the Sauk Centre Economic Development Authority. He has been a member of the advisory board of Saint Michael's Hospice since its inception. He is a past president of the Minnesota Funeral Directors Association. He is a Certified Eye Enucleator and in 2003 he was presented the Helen Keller Sight Award from the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank. In 1995 he was awarded the Certified Funeral Service Practitioner (CFSP) designation by the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice and since 2000 he has been a licensed insurance agent.
Sue was a member of the task force that established the Sauk Centre Senior Center and served for several years on the Springfest Committee for Holy Family School. She also served as a board member of Sauk Centre Opportunities, the Minnesota Star City Committee and the Celebrate Minnesota Committee. For several years she also served as secretary of the Sauk Centre Area Hockey Association. Since 2000 she has been a licensed insurance agent. Sue is responsible for most of our administrative duties, managing accounts payable and coordinating funeral follow-up with families we have served. She also coordinates our weekly radio program “Music and Memories” and our annual Christmas Service of Remembrance.
We have two sons, Nathan and Adam.
